While in Zermatt, I couldn’t help but notice how functional currency is outside of the United States, in particular, the Swiss Franc. As we see above, we immediately see that each franc is different and distinguishable from one another. This is achieved by a couple of basic design principals that seems to have alluded designers of the U.S. currency, color and size. Simple isn’t it? So, why can’t we apply this thinking to the U.S. dollar? And here’s another fun fact for you. In 2006, a federal judge ruled that the U.S. Treasury Department is violating law by failing to design and issue currency that is readily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired people. You can read the article here from cnn.com.And one last thing, if you’re OCD like me, here’s more proof that the Swiss Franc is far more functional than the U.S. dollar. I guess the designer uses money clips.
